Chicago Places: Chicago Brauhaus

There are so many fun neighborhoods to explore in Chicago. One of our newest favourites is Lincoln Square (home of The Book Cellar). It is a German neighborhood, and since I love Germany (& German food!), my dad and I decided to try out the biggest German restaurant in the neighborhood, Chicago Brauhaus

The Brauhaus is right next door to one of our favourite Chicago bookstores, and across the street from a cute courtyard. Stepping in the door felt like walking into Germany! They even have music & dancing throughout the week.

We enjoyed the amazing food: brats, real German mustard, potatoes (my dad had the amazing potato salad), sauerkraut, and very European bread. It was definitely the most authentic German food I've had outside of my favourite German city, Rothenburg. Yum!

Thanks for the great meal, Chicago Brauhaus! We'll be back!

Starved Rock Camping Trip

A few weekends ago, before the weather got cold, Daniel & I went on a fun camping trip. When we first started dating, we went to Starved Rock State Park with a group from church, so we were excited to go back this year.

We camped in a little spot in the woods and had fun walking around and seeing the other camper's sites. Starved Rock is about three hours from Chicago, and people are pretty serious about camping here: pop-up campers, picnic bench tablecloths, twinkle light, and coffee pots.

I packed some camping snacks (and of course muffins & the tea kettle!) and we enjoyed a night away from the city and reading time in front of the camp fire. The next morning, we went hiking at Starved Rock, then headed back to the city, feeling refreshed. I think we may have found a new yearly tradition!

Chicago Places: The Book Cellar

The Book Cellar

This is The Book Cellar, a great little bookstore in Lincoln Park in Chicago.

Game of Thrones

bookstore bookshelves
It's the kind of bookstore that you can just tell is curated by readers. You won't browse long before you find some interesting book that you've never seen before.

Reading; it's our only hope

They sell wine by the glass along with the usual coffee & snacks & magazines & books.

And they have book clubs that read things like The Ladies' Paradise by Emile Zola. As Jenny says, "These are my people."

Chicago Fire

Have you seen the show Chicago Fire?

I'd seen them filming around Chicago several times & kept meaning to sit down & watch it.

When I finally did, I got totally hooked. It's so good! I'm kind of tempted to go back & watch the whole first season over again.

Season two starts in about a month, so now is the perfect time to catch up on season one (it's on hulu right now.)

Have you seen it?

What TV shows have you been hooked on lately?

Summer in the City

We are having a pretty stunning summer in Chicago.

We would both consider ourselves Fall Girls & we even love the rain (it's cozy.) But we are soaking up the sunshine this summer.

It's been a gorgeous (read: not crazy scorching hot) Chicago summer. (Until this week! This week has been a bit melting.) July has been full of breezy hot days & blue skies.

A lot has been happening around here. Christy moved back to the States from England. Jenny married Daniel (& began a quest to de-girl-ify the apartment they now share.) Christy is about to celebrate her 32nd birthday. White House Down came out. Big stuff.

We've had so much fun starting this blog & are looking forward to sharing more with you guys. But in the meantime, we hope you get a chance to just go outside & soak up a little Vitamin D. Because summer is short, but as Martha would say, "It's a good thing."
